Here's a quick explainer on how our system identifies and applies gender to fan profiles.
Collecting PII, like gender, helps you get a clearer picture of who your audience is so you can connect with them in tailored ways with more impact.
Pro tip: as a best practice we recommend making a gender field optional as fans may have varying comfortability in sharing this answer
How is gender determined?
You can add a gender field to any of your campaigns to have fans provide gender outright. If not provided, our system will infer gender based on first names. Our system has an underlying logic that infers gender by matching against a table of more than 300K stored names.
If the ratio of what we see is higher than 75% of that name's distribution, we infer it as that gender.
For example, take the name Mark: 80% of Mark names in our database are male, 20% female - so we infer that it is a male fan.
Can these gender inferences be turned off?
This is an underlying logic in our product and cannot be changed or turned off per campaign unless you are using a gender field in the campaign which will then take precedent over that logic. You can also manually change genders on individual fan profiles.
