Asking Questions in Octane

Dashboards are a way to group sets of questions onto a single page. They’re how you quickly visualize important information and share insights.

A dashboard is made of “questions” which you can arrange on the page as you’d like. You can add text and header cards to organize your dashboards. You can even add filters to dashboards that filter data identically across multiple questions. And, you can make as many dashboards as you want.

How to create a dashboard

In the top right of the screen, click the +New > Dashboard.

Give your dashboard a name and a description, and choose which collection the dashboard should go in. Click Create, and you’ll be transported to your shiny new dashboard.

How to add questions to a dashboard

There are two ways to add questions to a dashboard: from questions (as you create them) or from the dashboard:

  • From a question: As you save a question, a modal pops up that asks to to choose a collection, and then, whether you want to save it to a dashboard. That’s where you can choose your desired dashboard. You can also add a question to a dashboard by clicking on the ellipsis (...) at the top right of a question, and selecting “Add to dashboard”

  • From a dashboard: Click the pencil icon to edit the dashboard. Then click on the + icon in the top right corner of the dashboard editing interface to add any of your saved questions to the dashboard, regardless of which collection the questions are in.

Once you add a question to your dashboard, it will look something like this:

When you are done adding questions, be sure to click Save in the top right corner before you exit edit mode

Adding header text or descriptions to your dashboard

We love a little context. Text cards allow you to include descriptions, explanations, notes, images, or even GIFs to your dashboards.

We’ve defaulted to mostly using these text cards to create separation between sections of charts and the like, but you can also use them to include links out to different websites, etc.

To add a text card, create a dashboard (or edit an existing one) and click on the T at the top right:

You can choose to add a heading or a regular text card. The regular text card uses Markdown to format.

Click the arrow in the bottom right corner of your text box to expand it and click the frame to drag and drop it around your dashboard.

Click Save again and your new text will appear on your dashboard:

Dashboard tabs

7000 open tabs never hurt anyone (you know who you are 👀). But just like browser tabs, you can add multiple tabs to your dashboard to keep things organized:

New tabs:

Click the sign on the tabs bar to create a new tab

Duplicate tabs:

When in dashboard edit mode, you can duplicate a tab and all its cards by clicking on the down arrow next to the tab that you want to copy.

Duplicating a dashboard:

Duplicate an existing dashboard if you don’t want to create a dashboard from scratch, or want to experiment by making changes to an existing dashboard without messing up the original.

To duplicate: click on the menu in the upper right of the dashboard and select Duplicate

By default, Octane will create a new dashboard with copies of the questions in the original dashboards (including tabs).

Arranging questions, charts and cards in your dashboard

To edit objects within your dashboard and move them around, click the pencil icon in the top right of the dashboard to enter the dashboard’s editing interface. From here, you can drag and drop your elements to new locations. Be sure to click save when you're done.
